Marvel Studios already have the perfect actor to play MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, yet this casting choice also presents further complications for the franchise. Ant-Man 3 is set to feature two villains – with the other being Kang the Conqueror played by Jonathan Majors – causing many to have begun speculating on who could play the other villain of the film, MODOK. Despite this ongoing debate, the most perfect choice for the villain’s actor has already been revealed, thanks to Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K show – only there are complications in bringing said actor to the MCU as a result of the prior series.
MODOK is a character from Marvel Comics who was originally an employee of A.I.M., a company seen in the MCU in Iron Man 3. The original MODOK, George Tarleton, underwent a mutagenic medical experiment in order to increase his intellect. While the procedure worked, it left him freakishly disfigured, with a massively oversized head and stunted body. MODOK then takes control of A.I.M and becomes a supervillain in the Marvel Universe as the Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing, or MODOK.
While the character has appeared in the MCU in one iteration in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., another is set to appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The perfect actor to play this character has done it before and was rightfully praised for his work on Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K: Patton Oswalt. While Oswalt only provided the voice for the character in that show, his performance stood out from the crowd. However, while Oswalt has gone on record as saying he would love to play the MCU MODOK in live-action, certain things may make it complicated to make this a reality.
Chan played Sersi, the lead in Eternals after having portrayed Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel. This, however, is different than if Patton Oswalt played both Pip the Troll and MODOK. For one, Minn-Erva’s role in Captain Marvel was minimal. Also, Chan was painted completely blue for the role, as Minn-Erva is a Kree. This meant that she could be used again as Sersi due to the disparity of the characters. With Oswalt though, his recognizable voice would be too similar in both roles to differentiate the two characters. While his voice could be digitally altered to allow him to play MODOK, his voice role in the Hulu show was what made the character so great, and would negatively affect the character as a result.
While speculation began long ago that MODOK should be Ant-Man 3’s villain, the inclusion of Kang led many to believe this wouldn’t be the case. However, with SDCC 2022 showing both villains in the brief look of the film, MODOK’s appearance was confirmed. While it wasn’t explicitly revealed who was playing the character, rumors out of Hall H suggest Corey Stoll’s Darren Cross from the first Ant-Man will be the MCU’s version of MODOK. If this is indeed true, that, unfortunately, presents another complication with Patton Oswalt potentially playing MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
